The entire goal for this blog is to help you, as a Christian entrepreneur, to straight up kick the devil in the teeth.  There are a lot of lies holding Christian business owners back from fully stepping into their God-given calling in the marketplace (and in the kingdom as a whole). And so today, we are diving into three lies that may be holding you back as a Christian entrepreneur. And of course I have scriptures to back it up and just kick those lies in the teeth. I’m pumped. Let’s go.

3 Big, FAT, Ugly Lies Keeping You from Growing as a Christian Entrepreneur

Lie #1: My Gift Isn’t Needed or Valuable

  • We live in this world where we get to see everybody else’s lives. We get to see their highlights, their “behind the scenes,” and a day in the life stuff. We get to see so much from other people’s lives that, honestly, we were never intended to see. In seeing so much of other peoples lives, the comparison trap is real. It’s really easy to look at somebody else and think, “Oh, man. I’m not as good at x y z as they are, so my gift isn’t needed. My gift isn’t valuable.” And that is a lie from the pit of hell.
  • It is so easy to see the value in someone else’s gift, but inadvertently degrade or downplay the value of your gift. And I am here as your sister in Christ to tell you your gift is needed. There are pieces and parts in the body of Christ, both locally and globally, that are missing because Christians have not boldly stepped into their calling.

    1 Corinthians 12: 12-17, NLT

The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. 13 Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. 14 Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. 15 If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? 18 But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. 19 How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.” 22 In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. 23 And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, 24 while the more honorable parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. 25 This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. 26 If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. 27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.”

Lie #2: Someone Else is Already Doing It, So I Shouldn’t Try

    • It’s easy to look at your circle of people in the marketplace that you’re familiar with and think, “There’s already somebody doing it. I don’t need to do it, because I don’t have anything new to offer.” But if we look at this in a global church versus a local church example, we could say, “Oh, there’s already somebody who can sing in the world. They don’t need me to sing.” Well, no. Have you ever heard two really great singers sing in harmony? The harmony created by both singers using their gifts, staying in their lane, and working together is amazing. It’s exponentially more beautiful than just one great voice!
    • There are more than enough people who need what you can offer. And, yes, there’s probably already somebody doing something similar to what you’re doing, and that’s okay. You’re going to have a unique way of doing it (as you should because you are unique). We serve a creative God! He created a monkey with a rainbow-colored butt and makes every snowflake unique. Do you think he ran out of ideas for you? No. We serve a creative god, and he made you unique for this time, this market, and this world right now. So quit playing small.

Lie #3: I Don’t Have What I Need to Be a Successful Christian Entrepreneur

    • Ooooh y’all this one is a BIGGIE. I think part of what causes us to get trapped in this thought process is this: God will often give us the long-term vision and then just the first step or two to get there. He’ll show us the vision of where he wants us to go with x y z thing, 50 miles down the road. But then we’re like, “Wait, I need to know the 4,500 steps to get there! But in reality, God wants us to trust him and be obedient step-by-step-by-step to get there. We have the vision of where we’re going, just not the detailed blueprints on how to get there.
    • Hebrews 11:6 encourages us: “Without faith it is impossible to please God!”
    • If we knew all 4,500 steps needed to get there, we’d either get overwhelmed or think we could do it on our own. Maybe you don’t have everything you need to be successful with the end goal today, but I can promise you this: you have what you need to be obedient today.
    • Here’s a little thing that is not talked about enough: You will grow in the going. There are things that you are going to learn how to do that when you look back on your journey you’ll be like, “Holy cow, I learned how to do that!? That’s AMAZING!”
    • I want to encourage you here to be faithful with the little things. You’re not ready for what God has for you ten years from now. You’re just not, and neither am I! But you are ready for what God has planned for you today. Be faithful with what God has for you today, and you will be prepared for the good things God has for you ten years from now.

Ways to Guard Your Heart as a Christian Entrepreneur

Just a few practical tips to help guard your heart, and your mind, against these big, nasty lies that will hold you back as a Christian entrepreneur.

      1. Monitor Your Thoughts
        1. Where is your mind? What thoughts are going on in your mind?
        2. One of my favorite preachers used to say. “ You can’t keep the birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair.” You may have discouraging thoughts come, but don’t allow them to stay!
        3. Capture those birds. Shoo away those birds before they build a nest in your hair and replace those discouraging thoughts with thoughts that are true, pure, lovely, holy, and of a good report!
      2. Be Careful of What Comes In and Out
        1. What is coming into your ears? What’s coming into your eyes? What are you listening to? Who are you following? What are you reading? Guard your heart and your mind.
        2. Proverbs 4:23 encourages us to “Guard your heart above all else for from it flows the wellspring of life.”
        3. Philippians 5:2: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ.
        4. Get the scripture in your ears, in your eyes, and out your mouth, and I promise you, you will see and feel a difference because the word of God does not fail.

      Philippians 4:8

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatsoever things are pure and lovely and of a good report, if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things.

My Prayer For You, a Christian Entrepreneur

Lord, I just thank you for the opportunity to speak into the lives of these Christian entrepreneurs, whether they are ten years deep in business or just wanting to get started in a business. You have put that desire to serve people in the marketplace on their hearts, and I thank you for that desire.

Lord, I ask that you would help them to guard their heart and be good soil. That they would be open to your teaching, Father, that you would help them to guard their heart against the lies of the enemy, against information overload and the opinions of man. But, Father, I thank you that you would help them to to just steep themselves, their hearts, in the word of God.

Lord, I ask that you would surround them with like-minded Christians who are going to speak truth into their life. I ask that you would help them to be good friends to other Christians, that they would pour into them, pour into other Christian business owners, and start seeing this gift of business as a gift from you to be nurtured and developed.

Father, I ask that you give them a spirit of boldness, that they wouldn’t play small with the gift that you’ve given them, Lord, but that they would see it as a gift and they would run with it.

And Lord, I ask that you would give them your wisdom, and give them your revelation. I just plead the blood of Jesus over them, over their mind, over their hearts, over their business. And Lord, I ask that you would help them to get in the Word. Give them a desire, a hunger for the things of God, and to dig into your word, to know you more, and make you known in the marketplace, in their business, and in their family and friends.

Lord, we love you. We love you, God, and we want to honor and serve you. We want to bless you as your kids, as kingdom ambassadors for you. And we thank you for the opportunity. We thank you so much for your Son.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen.
