As a professional website copywriter and content strategist, I often see so many amazing small businesses with fantastic products and a heart of gold to serve their customers, but their homepage copy is costing them SO many sales simply because they are missing 1 or all of these 5 things every homepage needs.

I’ve gotta be honest. When I would read the scripture about “come unto me like a child” years ago I didn’t really give much weight to it. If you’ve been around here for a minute, you know that large groups of small children are NOT my thang. Gimme teenagers all day, but booger eaters in large quantities? Nope. I’m out. It honestly wasn’t until I had my own kids that this scripture started taking root and making me examine the way I approach my Heavenly Father. I mean, sometimes you just don’t know what you don’t know, right? But for those of you who are where I used to be (or maybe you never struggled with that) here is some fresh perspective on things my children have taught me about my relationship with God and spiritual growth and development.

Is blogging dead? Isn’t the only reason you need to blog is if you want to BE a “blogger” whatever that is? Don’t bloggers just have to post about their food and their travel all the time? I just eat regular people food and go to and from work every day. I just don’t see the value in blogging. I do NOT have time to blog. Or my personal favorite “blogging isn’t important for my industry (photography, creative, makers, travel, tourism, etc).” And I get it, blogging can seem SUPER overwhelming. Even as a writer, I remember when I first started MY blog with a sleep-eating baby propped up on her nursing pillow, the list of different methods, crazy time-consuming things all the “experts” said I needed, not to mention having to google every other word to figure out what it means. SE-What? BUT, I was determined to write valuable content to help people in the form of a blog. I knew that God was telling me to write and blog. So, I enrolled in figure-it-out-university and passed. Even more than that, along the way I’ve learned just how valuable blogging is to (almost) ANY business, and lots of tips to make it feel not overwhelming and more like a continued conversation with your dream clients.

You’ve come up with a brilliant idea. You’ve got the catchy business name, the dream growth plan, and just KNOW this business is going to be gangbusters successful. But it’s going to take so much of your time. You’re ready to go all in. So you start formulating a plan to tell your current boss that you’re out. You’re quitting. You’re ready to live your dream and build that business. After all, YOLO (you only live once for my fellow baby grandmas out there).
But wait. Don’t throw deuces and say “bye Felicia” to the ol 9-5 yet. What if I told you that your future business (not to mention bank account) are MUCH better off if you do NOT quit your day job yet. That’s right, the girl who can go 0-60 on a dream real quick is telling you to SLOW down and DON’T quit your day job for your dream business yet.

Ever sit down to write and just stare at the blinking curser? You know that you NEED to post content. You understand the immense value of your small business having a blog and regular, valuable social media content. But you just don’t know what to write. “I don’t have anything to say,” you think. So you throw out a pic (because you know you need to post) and some random song lyrics and pray that the algorithm throws you a bone and gets your post in front of a few people. Can I let you in on a secret? Coming up with content ideas can really be easier than you think. Here are my proven ways to never, and I do mean never run out of content ideas.

Click through a few of your favorite influencers bios to read the about page on their website and I can almost promise you that you will find something like this: “Coffee is my love language” and you can always find me cuddling with my pups” and then to be regaled with a long story about why they got into XYZ industry and cute photos of them. Great. Now you know their Starbucks order…. Which is fine… IF they (and you) also include these 3 vital things that MOST small business owners are missing on their about page.

I like results. I LOVE seeing visible progress. I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I am betting you are to some degree. I mean, who doesn’t like getting stuff done! To top it off, I am SUPER competitive. I really enjoy achieving things. I feel “off” if I don’t get anything done in a day. I like getting where I’m going. But you see the thing that I’m learning is, it’s often SO much more about who we BECOME on the way to the things God has for us, than just checking those “good works” (Eph 2:10) and goals off our list. But how does an achiever, a competitor, a highly driven individual not go NUTS along the way? How do we stay full of joy even when the progress is slower than we would like? Allow me to share what has REALLY helped me.

“an unexamined life is not worth living” ~Plato
For years I have loved this quote, and honestly, I think that making a habit of reflecting and re-evaluating has been crucial to our personal development and spiritual growth. It’s hard to grow or meet goals without reflecting and evaluating.
As we close out the year and prepare for a new year, here are some great questions to ask yourself, journal about, and even discuss with your inner circle peeps. Oftentimes, they will see an area of strength or weaknesses that we might not otherwise catch.
Remember to do this with a posture of mercy, grace and humility. God’s first response to our mistakes is mercy.
